Segmentation is key to using 80/20 intelligently.Typically, however, the firms which make the lion’s share of profits in a market are those that have the highest market share. In 2011 Apple only had a four percent share of cellphones, but its iPhone made more than 50 percent of the total profits enjoyed by all cellphone makers (a 50/4 pattern). Another vital observation is that very few companies in a market make most of the profits in that market. The company was spending an enormous amount to attract these customers, yet making a huge loss on them. Without giving the game away, I can tell you that the chickens were small gamblers who cost a fortune to recruit and gave very little revenue because they didn’t bet much and lost their money quickly. In a study I made of a gambling business, I divided customers into ‘chickens’, ‘geese’, and ‘foxes’. For example, 20 percent of the ‘chunks’ of business may give 80 percent of profits and cash – but which chunks? How are they defined? You need a hypothesis before you can test it, and the fun is devising a new hypothesis never suspected before, but which works very well and leads you to action that can multiply profits. The value is in looking for 80/20 (or similar) patterns which exist, but which have not yet been detected.I have seen 80/1 distributions (fewer than one percent of words are used in common speech 80 percent of the time) and a huge variety of other ones. The distribution may be 70/30 or 90/10 or 99/1, and the numbers don’t even need to add up to 100. Rather, it is an empirical observation – one that crops up time and time again, but not very often in the precise 80/20 distribution. The 80/20 principle is derived from his work, but it is a simplification he never made. I have been unable to find this used before the 1940s. Contrary to what is asserted widely on the internet and even by many reputable authors who should know better, Pareto never used the phrase ‘80/20’.He produced an algebraic equation which was remarkably accurate whatever data he examined – the shape of the graph looked the same regardless of the subject studied. He found that most money went to a small minority of the people in his samples, and that the distribution of wealth was typically the same whatever the time period he took, and whichever country he researched. He was studying patterns of wealth and income in nineteenth century England. The pattern underlying 80/20 was discovered in 1897 by Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto.Companies have far too many products and customers, many or most of which are unprofitable. Even more vital – a fifth of products and customers typically yield four-fifths of profits. 20 percent of products usually account for 80 percent of sales value so do 20 percent of customers. In business, many examples of 80/20 have been validated. If this is true – and it usually is – four-fifths of the effort and time is largely irrelevant. For example, it may that 80 percent of what you achieve in your work comes from 20 percent of the effort or time spent. If most results come from few causes, there is great mileage in isolating the few causes that have the greatest results. The 80/20 principle states that there is a predictable, in-built imbalance between causes and results, inputs and outputs, effort and reward. A good benchmark or hypothesis is that 80 percent of results flow from 20 percent of causes – and sometimes from a very much smaller proportion of powerful forces. The universe is wonky! The 80/20 principle tells us that in any population, some things are likely to be much more important than others. Here are the 27 things you absolutely need to know about the 80/20 principle: This time I’m going to give the essence – if you like, the 80/20 - of 80/20. My last post simplified my (and Greg Lockwood’s) book Simplify – I’m pleased that it was thought useful to many of you.

Canva’s PDF Editor What makes a great PDF editor? While everyone else is stuck with the generic military shooter, SUPERHOT has changed genres while still retaining what people care about in the FPS genre. The gameplays change of the time moving when you do, and the move to a more tactical game is what has made SUPERHOT stand out in a genre that tries rather hard not to innovate. The main gameplay loop of time slowing down to the point of almost stopping when you aren’t moving is intended to give players far more time to react to enemies. The number of enemies and how they will attack the player will change to the point that some level of tactics is needed. Players won’t be able to mindlessly hulk out and attack enemies head-on for long. Yet to execute most of the moves I come up with requires some proficiency in the First Person Shooter genre.īut SUPERHOT is more of a puzzle game. This feels closer to Portal, but I also see pieces of Baba Is You, even touches of Nethack is here. But rather than being an intense shooter, I find that my mind goes to a more analytical space. Yes, you aim guns, shoot at enemies and it has the gimmick of time moves when you do. Mind Control Delete isn’t just a simple First Person Shooter. Yet the more that I play Mind Control Delete, the more I come back to one fact that keeps hitting me in the face. There are 32 maps in Mind Control Delete, but each time you play a map, it’s extremely randomized and additional pieces can modify the layout to the point that every run even at the same level will feel completely different. So Mind Control Delete is a rogue-lite, and what that means is you get randomized levels with similar layouts. I’ll be putting the name of the game in the upper left corner as it’s a bit hard to differentiate the two titles by just video. We also have a third title to talk about here, but let’s start with these two games. It’s more SUPERHOT, which is exactly what I wanted, but I think Mind Control Delete was always the game SUPERHOT should have been and, thankfully, we can talk about both of them. Well, 2020 is here, stuck in the house, and suddenly Mind Control Delete gets dropped. If it don't I never was going to know to start with. Close enough and if it has a name attached to it, I'll find out. Also, my number says I live in 2 towns over, as does my old man's. In our testing, Stockfish 15 is ahead of Stockfish 14 by 36 Elo points and wins nine times more game pairs than it loses. Giving stockfish a free, easy to use interface, and allowing players to use their cloud analysis feature (again, for free) is a huge contribution in and of itself IMO. The analysis tools allow players to analyze their games using Stockfish, the strongest chess engine in the world. For example, you would not want Stockfish to avoid a good move because it turns an opening into a midgame where the measurements of the position are significantly different and result in a (poorly compared) decline in the current position and material score. 2) Confiure any engine with Multi-PV enabled to your choice of top 'N' moves. I would myself predict that a discrete one would not be used since that would make evaluations based on the future more complicated to get right. This makes Stockfish the strongest chess engine running on your smartphone or normal desktop PC, and we estimate that on a modern four cores CPU, Stockfish 11 could give 1:1000 time odds to the human chess champion having classical time control, and be on par with him. In the case that it is an explicit metric, is this metric a discrete one ("opening", "midgame", etc.), or a continuous one (a number that represents how full the board is)? Is the stage of the game an explicit human-enforced metric, or is it really just a positional awareness from the models in use that people often describe as the stage of the game? If I understand correctly, Stockfish (15.1 at the time of asking this) values material differently according to the stage of the game, "stages" being analogous to what we call opening, midgame, and endgame. And when you’re surprised about your sleep getting better, that wakes you up, because you’re not sure it’s going to keep working. “If people have had poor sleep for years, they’re surprised when they start getting better. “We tell people to wait one or two months,” says Pelayo. “But some people take two weeks to adjust if it’s a really long trip.”įor people with a condition like DSPS, getting back on track depends on how long the pattern has been entrenched. If you’re simply adjusting after being in a different time zone, “the rule of thumb is that it usually takes one day per time zone,” Pelayo says. If your primary care provider does not have expertise in sleep, they can refer you to a sleep specialist who can help. Chronically not getting good sleep can do a lot of damage, and there are healthcare providers out there who can help. He recognizes that from the consumer perspective, it’s difficult to be able to save for a down payment “when you’re throwing away money on rent every month.” Investor POVĪndreessen Horowitz General Partner Alex Rampell led the first investment in Divvy. “The number of people who fall outside of the traditional mortgage box is growing,” she added, with more people struggling to be able to purchase a home. While Divvy’s mission involves wanting to make homeownership more accessible, Hefets points out that it’s a lucrative business model as well. Now the average home prices are more like just over $200,000, she said. When it first started out, the prices of the homes it bought averaged around $140,000 to $150,000. “Even the most experienced players in the space, maybe have low single-digit buyback rates so it’s definitely quite a bit higher than what the rest of the industry is seeing,” Hefets told TechCrunch. They also have the option to re-up their contract if needed, to take a bit longer to save up for a larger down payment.ĭivvy started buying homes in the first half of 2018 so far, the company is seeing nearly half of those renters buying back the homes. The renters can choose to cash out their equity or purchase the home before the three years are up, if they choose. Part of that money is a “market-rate” rent and about 25% goes toward building up their savings in the house so they can put a down payment (estimated at 10% value of the home) on to purchase from Divvy later. They move in at closing, and pay one monthly amount. Customers pick out a home and Divvy purchases it on their behalf with the renter contributing an initial 1-2% of the home value. Rather than buy homes and look for renters, the company does the opposite. “So while traditional financing dried up, we saw a really good tailwind for our business.”ĭivvy declined to disclose the valuation at which this round was raised but Hefets said it was “very highly oversubscribed.” Rent to ownĭivvy claims to be different from other real estate tech companies in that it aims to digitize “the archaic, data-heavy processes buyers encounter along the way.” It works with renters who want to become homeowners by buying the home they want and renting it back to them for three years “while the savings needed to own it themselves.” “Mortgages were harder to get yet we were seeing this mad rush of people who wanted to move out of multifamily and downtown areas,” Hefets recalls. It also worked with its existing customers by offering flexibility and rent relief in the way of waived late fees and flexible payment scheduling, for example. Ultimately, over the course of 2020, Divvy expanded operations from eight to 16 total markets and financed five times as many homes as it had in pre-pandemic times. So while lenders were busier than ever, much of that volume was driven by people who already owned homes refinancing with the lower rates.ĭivvy Homes CEO and co-founder Adena Hefets. Instead of making it easier to buy a home, many banks actually tightened underwriting requirements for approvals, said Divvy CEO Hefets. Mortgage rates dropped to historic lows in 2020, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, Divvy - which was co-founded by Adena Hefets, Nick Clark and Alex Klarfeld - was incubated in Levchin’s startup studio HVF. The startup last raised $43 million in Series B funding from the likes of Affirm CEO Max Levchin and homebuilder Lennar (via its venture arm), among others. The latest financing brings Divvy’s total debt and equity raised since its 2017 inception to over $500 million, with about one-third of that raised in equity and two-thirds in debt. Tiger Global Management led the round, which also saw participation from a slew of other investors, including GGV Capital, Moore Specialty Credit, JAWS Ventures and existing backers such as a16z. Despite all the headaches that come with it, homeownership is still the American dream for many.ĭivvy Homes - a startup that is out to help more people realize that dream by buying a house and renting it back to them while they build equity - has just closed on $110 million in Series C funding. |
